Outline

Devices that Monitor Faults

  • geologists created instruments to record the ground movements along the fault
    • these instruments that geologists use measure the stress and deformation in the Earth's crust
Creep Meters
  • Creep Meter measures horizontal movements from the ground
    • this tool measures the amount of how much the fault has moved
Laser Ranging Devices
  • a tool using a laser to locate the smallest fault movements ever
    • can detect any movement of changes in the distance of the reflector
Tiltmeters
  • this scale that measures the tilt of a fault
    • the Tiltmeter with with the water indicates how much the fault has tilted by the tilt of the water inside the scaled
Satellite Monitors
  • instead of making instruments that are based on the ground they also concentrated to measure ground movements from space
    • this type of a instrument uses radio waves to see how big the fault
Monitoring Risk in the United States
  • even if the geologist use all the technology in the world they still wouldn't predict the exact measurements of an earthquake
    • but geologists know that earthquakes store up energy inside a rock of a fault
      • geologist can also predict where the earthquake will strike by determining where faults are active
